From Department Store to Downtown Living

The Legacy of Neel’s – A Downtown Macon Icon Reimagined

Once home to Joseph N. Neel’s Department Store, this block has been a cornerstone of downtown Macon’s story for more than a century. Today, Neel’s Lofts brings new life to this space—blending modern loft living with the spirit of a beloved landmark.

Inspired by Macon,
Reimagined for Today

Neel’s Lofts is a new build that honors the retro charm and vibrant energy of the original store. From its mid-century-inspired colors to branding cues straight from the ‘70s, we’re keeping the Neel’s spirit and legacy alive –just in a form built for modern downtown living.

When Joseph N. Neel’s Department Store opened its doors in 1886, it wasn’t just a place to shop, it was where Macon came together. Generations of locals bought their first suits here, browsed for back-to-school clothes, and stopped by for the latest styles.

But for decades after the store closed in 1993, the building sat vacant. Despite its sentimental value, years of disrepair made it unsafe to restore. The decision to demolish was difficult but it was also an opportunity.

"That is a heck of a brand to have stuck around like that."

- Robbo Hatcher, H2 Capital

One of the most visible nods to the past is the original Neel’s sign –carefully preserved and repurposed as a centerpiece of the new building. It’s more than a decorative detail; it’s an iconic landmark that connects the block’s past with its future.
